Folding iPhone Demand Forces Apple to Expand Production Targets

Supply chain data indicates Apple is increasing manufacturing output for its new foldable device after initial shipping delays signaled high consumer interest.

Apple has reportedly increased its production orders for the iPhone Duo by more than 40%, a significant adjustment driven by what the company termed “extraordinary” pre-order demand. This move comes as supply chain analysts confirm that the tech giant is ramping up manufacturing to meet the surge in interest for its first folding smartphone.

The initial response from the market was immediate and intense. When pre-orders opened on Friday, customers quickly reported seeing extended delivery windows, with some estimates stretching into late January. While such delays can sometimes indicate logistical bottlenecks, the latest reporting suggests the primary cause was simply an overwhelming volume of orders rather than a shortage of available units.

To manage the influx and prevent inventory from being hoarded, Apple implemented a strict limit of two units per customer. This measure was designed to curb scalping activities. As anticipated, some early buyers have since seen their estimated shipping dates move forward, a shift that aligns with reports that Apple is actively boosting its shipment targets to accommodate the sustained interest.

The scale of this expansion is substantial. According to a DigiTimes report citing supply chain sources, Apple has raised its expected shipment volume for the first twelve months from 9.7 million units to 14 million. This upward revision underscores the company’s confidence that strong demand for the new form factor will persist well beyond the initial launch window.

Despite the hardware success, early adopters are navigating a software landscape that is still maturing. Third-party applications have not yet been fully optimized for the device’s unique interface, though Apple states that the situation is improving rapidly as developers adapt their tools. Initial reviews, based on a week of usage, consistently highlight app support as a key area of focus for the user experience.

Hardware design choices have also drawn attention, particularly the inclusion of Touch ID, which some view as a step back from the standard biometric security. However, recent reports indicate that Apple is already testing prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2 that feature Face ID, suggesting the company is working to address user preferences in the next iteration of the product.

As the device begins to reach consumers, the focus shifts from launch-day hype to long-term usability. The ability to ramp up production quickly demonstrates Apple’s supply chain agility, but the ongoing refinement of the software ecosystem will be critical in determining whether the iPhone Duo becomes a standard fixture in the market or remains a niche curiosity.
