Federal agents have arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney who allegedly plotted to assassinate Texas Representative Keith Self, a development that has raised the security profile of the congressman’s ongoing campaign for a third term. Self, who represents the state’s third congressional district, confirmed to NBC 5 that his team learned of the detention on October 6, one day after the FBI took the suspect into custody on October 5. The arrest marks a significant escalation in threats against the lawmaker, who is currently in the midst of active campaigning across North Texas.
The suspected motive and target of the plot were specific. Campaign officials stated that federal investigators believed the teen had been radicalized and was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. The intended target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17, an event that featured former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The team was informed that the suspect was being monitored by federal agents prior to the arrest, and they were told the plot was serious enough to warrant an immediate increase in situational awareness.
Self described his reaction to the news as measured, citing his extensive military background. He noted that having deployed to combat zones multiple times helped him remain calm rather than panicked. “I understood since the arrest had already taken place, we just needed to be aware of was he a lone wolf or not,” Self said. He emphasized that while the situation was taken seriously, it was not traumatic for him in the same way it might have been for colleagues without that combat experience. His wife, who served as a military spouse for 25 years, also understood the potential risks involved in the situation.
Despite the specific threat, Self proceeded with the October 17 event as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans, stating that the occasion was delightful and no incident occurred. Since then, he has continued his daily polling and voter outreach. “We continued our activities and just watched what was going on around us,” he said. He expressed confidence that the threat would not stop him from alerting the American people to what he perceives as a concerning political ideology, noting that his team simply increased its vigilance.
This incident follows a period of heightened focus on religious and cultural issues within Self’s district. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and affirming the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land. The district also includes McKinney, where the city council recently approved a site plan for a mosque expansion after hours of contentious public comment, a move that was later followed by an effort to recall several council members. Self’s Democratic opponent, Evan Hunt, also condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
The FBI Dallas office has not yet provided additional details as of this writing, and the teen’s identity remains undisclosed while the investigation continues. Self’s team noted that while they had received threats in the past, none had risen to the level of a formal arrest until now. The congressman’s campaign is now operating with a higher level of security awareness, but the central message remains unchanged: the campaign will continue its work throughout the district.
