Musk Election Funding: Billion-Dollar Push Shapes Senate Contests

Elon Musk has contributed more than $76 million to a political committee to aid Republican candidates as the midterms conclude.

Elon Musk provided his personal political committee, America PAC, with over $76 million during the initial two weeks of October to support Republican candidates. The contribution was detailed in a pre-election report the committee filed with the Federal Election Commission. America PAC spent close to $43 million in the same period, ending with nearly $47 million in cash available for the final stage of the campaign.

The Texas Senate race was the main focus of the spending. The committee invested $15.2 million there, which is double the amount spent on that race throughout the summer. Of that amount, $12.4 million went to efforts against Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million supported Republican Ken Paxton. Since then, filings show an additional $9.1 million spent opposing Talarico, bringing the total for his opposition to nearly $28 million. This represents approximately 40 percent of the committee's total spending supporting or opposing candidates. The committee also shifted its strategy, spending $11.4 million on digital advertising, a figure close to the combined total for mail and texting.

Musk has contributed more than $445 million to Republican political groups throughout this election cycle, according to an analysis of FEC filings. This total includes over $165 million directed to America PAC since July alone. The committee declined to comment on the matter. Musk has companies such as Tesla and SpaceX based in Texas and has posted about the race on X. On Wednesday, he stated that "there is something deeply wrong with Talarico" and claimed, without evidence, that he "would vote to take away your kids and transition them." Talarico responded the same day, stating that there is a problem with a system that allows "one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator."

The Texas race is currently a toss-up. An Emerson College poll conducted October 17 to 19 found Talarico at 48 percent and Paxton at 46 percent, a result within the poll's 3-point margin of error. If Democrats win the House, lawmakers set to lead committees have indicated they will investigate Musk's role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), his companies' federal contracts, and what Zoe Lofgren called an "astounding" number of conflicts of interest. Democratic control of Congress could create further issues for Musk. On Friday, Silicon Valley Democrats requested an investigation into restrictions on SpaceX's Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. In a letter to the White House, Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna stated that the next Congress will closely examine federal funding given to Musk's businesses.
