Anthropic investors sit on billions ahead of potential $2 trillion IPO

Early and late-stage backers are poised for massive returns as the AI lab prepares for a public listing that could value the company at up to $2 trillion.

The race to monetize artificial intelligence is approaching a critical financial milestone. Anthropic, one of the leading AI laboratories, is expected to go public this year with a valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion. While the company’s latest private market valuation stands at $965 billion, the stakes held by its venture capital firms and early backers already represent billions of dollars in equity. This pending public listing promises to be a significant windfall for the investment community that supported the firm from its early days through its recent growth phases.

The financial journey of these investors has been marked by rapid appreciation in value over the last few years. In 2021, the startup was valued at $461 million during its Series A round. By last year, that figure had climbed to $183 billion. More recently, the company reached a valuation of $380 billion earlier this year. This steep upward trajectory has transformed modest initial investments into multi-billion dollar holdings for key stakeholders.

Several prominent figures and firms have seen their portfolios grow substantially as a result. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, invested in the company’s Series A in 2021. According to PitchBook data, he currently owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This position has grown significantly since he first entered the capitalization table.

Late-stage investors have also captured enormous value. Iconiq, an investment outfit, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That massive bet is now worth $17 billion and has the potential to double again at the IPO. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D, has invested more than $1 billion over time. Their stake is currently valued at $14 billion, reflecting the firm’s long-term commitment to the AI lab’s development.

Other major players have entered the scene at higher valuations but still secured substantial returns. Sequoia, a famed venture capital firm, backed Anthropic for the first time only earlier this year. At that time, the company was valued at $380 billion. The $3 billion investment granted them about 1% ownership, meaning their investment has already more than doubled in value since the capital was deployed.

Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen significant growth in its position. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its investment. This accumulation has resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains a major asset for the company.

Perhaps the most dramatic multiple belongs to Spark Capital. The firm is the only VC known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. They invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a value of $7 billion. As the company moves toward its public listing, these figures underscore the lucrative nature of the AI investment landscape.

The upcoming IPO will serve as the final test for these valuations. If the company achieves the projected $2 trillion mark, the returns for these early and late-stage backers will become even more pronounced. The market is watching closely to see how the public investors react to the valuation of one of the most important technology companies of the decade.
